Pearl Harbor
Certificate: Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Kate Beckinsale, Cuba Gooding Jr, Tom Sizemore, Alec Baldwin
Length: 183 minutes Director: Michael Bay
Rating: An epic action packed recreation of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the subsequent American retaliatory strike on Japan. This is intermixed with a love triangle, as pilots and best friends since childhood Rafe (Ben Affleck) and Danny (Josh Hartnett) both fall for the same woman, Evelyn (Kate Beckinsale).

The film is fairly evenly mixed between action and drama. The attack on Pearl Harbor itself takes up the whole middle hour of the film, and is brilliantly sequenced, which the huge $139m budget plain to see on screen. There is also build up action as Rafe volunteers to join the English in Europe before the attack on Pearl Harbor, and also in the final segment when both Rafe and Danny take part in the retaliatory strike.

The love story forms the major link between the action, with Ben, Josh & Kate are bringing warmth and depth to their characters. The only real problem with the film is that the script has a little too many cheesy lines, with some particularly unbelievable dialogue from the military and political leaders of both sides. Thankfully such scenes are short, and whenever Ben, Josh or Kate take the screen such criticism is not due.

Overall, this is an action packed movie, with more depth to the story than you might have otherwise thought. If you don't mind the occasional bit of over the top patriotism, then you should enjoy this 3 hour marathon, which goes by at a fast pace.
